CranioSacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy uses a gentle touch to the head and body to help nourish the nervous system and reduce stress.

A relaxing
and effective
treatment to
promote wellbeing

Our nervous systems are influenced heavily by the craniosacral system–the membranes and fluid that nourish it. Craniosacral therapy (CST) is an extremely gentle technique designed to balance the flow of the cerebral spinal fluid with light pressure using fingers on your head and the rest of your body. The result is overall support of the nervous system and extreme relaxation.

CST is intended to address the everyday stresses endured by the body. This common stress often results in a tightening of body tissues, which can also impact the craniosacral system.

All of this is detectable and repairable with CST. Your experience of CST will be similar to a light pressure massage that often puts people in a meditative state.

Using a light touch (with the pressure akin to feeling a ripe tomato) on the skull and throughout the body, slight adjustments can make a big difference. By releasing the tension, the fluids that nourish the craniosacral system can flow freely.

Many patients experience not only relief, but a sense of deep relaxation after treatment and make CST part of their overall health care. That’s because a nourished central nervous system means relaxation and optimal body function.

Effective treatment built on a century of knowledge

The craniosacral system is made up of membranes and fluid that extend from the bones of the skull, face and mouth (cranium) and down the spine to the tailbone (sacrum). This system protects and nourishes the brain, spinal cord and attached bones.

CST has its origins in the work of Dr. William Sutherland, who explored the concept of skull bone movement in the early 1900s. Then in 1970, Dr. John Upledger observed a rhythmic movement of the craniosacral system–the cerebrospinal fluid and fascial tissue that surrounds, nourishes, and protects the brain and spinal cord.

Over the next decades, Dr. Upledger initiated and supervised extensive research and testing of the mechanisms behind the craniosacral system. This work led to his development of CST.

Everyone from infants to the elderly can safely benefit from CST. Whether on its own or combined with other methods, CST is ideal for evaluating and enhancing nervous system function.

Promote health and wellbeing

CST can have a big impact on the body because it nourishes the central nervous system, which is responsible for proper body function. Here are just some of the things CST can address:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • General wellness
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Immune support
  • PTSD
  • Pregnancy and pre-labor
  • Sprains, strains and pains
  • Tension and stress-related disorders

Of course, there are some cases where we wouldn’t recommend CST, such as:

  • Cerebral hemorrhage
  • Aneurysm
  • Severe bleeding disorders
  • Recent traumatic head injuries
